Nguzunguzu – “Delirium”

JUNE GLOOM IS casting its gray shroud across Los Angeles, but there is a bright spot.

Nguzunguzu is prepping their latest EP, Warm Pulse, out next month on Hippos In Tanks, and the duo of Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda have revealed the first streaming track, “Delirium”, that goes. Big time.

As always, the first element to speak to jazner is the universal language of bass. The low-end on “Delirium” is massive, fitting cleanly with the undulating, crisp snare & hi-hat trickles. The toy piano melody gives the track an eerie tone, mixed with siren samples and the token gunshot blast that call to Nguzunguzu’s roots with Fade To Mind and it’s parent label across the sea, Night Slugs.

Warm Pulse is definitely one to look forward to in the coming weeks. Hop over to the Hippos In Tanks site for more on how to git yr copy.

Gettin Silly w/ Hype Willy

PLUCKED FROM LATE night radio waves, a crackling station emerges with a fuzziness bridging unknown distances to warm you with traces of tunes.  One wrong move and the reception is toast.

Carefully sifting through the static, it’s none other than our old friend Hype Williams, the duo of Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland, who recently released their latest LP One Nation off Hippos In Tanks (HIT).

One Nation is a far-out trek through tinpot beats, lo-fi Detroit style synths, and deliberate chintziness that makes the journey all the more silly.

“Businessline” begins with a skip in the loop, a do over moment that turns into a woozy daze of synths and effects that truly captures the feeling its title beckons.

“You’re Girl Smells Chung When She Wears Dior” cries like a cassette tape being gobbled up, the chord progression and vocals pulling at the heartstrings.

“Unfaithful” switches it up to a sunny mood, with a quasi-reggaeton beat and looped keyboard drippings that gets cut short in a perfectly ungraceful way.  Diggin it.

There are plenty of k-hole jams as well, with the droning “Break4love” and the bassy “Jah” paving a perfect path down the rabbit hole.

Peep game, player, Hype Williams is always coming through with new beats to keep you company on those late nights when sleep ain’t a consideration.
